A
NOTE ON PREVENTION
According to a recent report by the American Road and
Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), steps can be taken
to help save lives on the roadways. Federal studies have shown
that relatively low-cost capital improvements save lives,
prevent injuries, and are highly cost-beneficial. For example:
A median that separates traffic can reduce fatalities 73%.
Removing roadside obstacles and realigning roadways can
reduce fatalities by 66%.
Dedicated turning lanes and traffic channelization at
high-risk intersections reduce fatal collisions by 47%.
Improved motorist information can reduce fatalities by 39%.
Replacing a dangerous bridge with a new one can reduce fatal
crashes by 86%.
According to ARTBA, every $1 billion invested by the public in
government-financed road improvements since 1950 has helped
prevent 1,400 premature deaths and nearly 50,000 injuries and
helped save the American society over $2 billion in health care,
insurance, lost wages, and productivity costs.
